There’s a very familiar feeling about this.
Manchester United are in a period of turmoil, with head coach Michael Carrick under severe scrutiny for his oversight of a 40-year low start to a league season.
Following a three-nil defeat to Bournemouth, alarm bells are sounding at Old Trafford.
Sky Sports have provided a huge update on the situation, revealing, “United’s bosses were already considering alternatives for the head coach role even before the defeat to Bournemouth amid the club’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season.
“The United hierarchy will now accelerate that process, with an expectation from insiders at the club that Carrick will be relieved of his duties.
“That decision will ultimately come down to director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, who will make a recommendation to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.”
It’s a huge call, and appears to all-but confirm an imminent managerial change.
Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett and Dan Khan said, “If Carrick is to depart, Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe are the two front runners to take over at Old Trafford.
“Both are available to start quickly, and neither would require any compensation to be paid. Howe, when he resigned as Newcastle manager in July, said he wanted to take a break from football to recharge his batteries. But Sky Sports News has been told he would be interested in talking to United, should a vacancy become available.”
It’s a big revelation, but comes as no surprise.
The easiest way to stop the rot at Old Trafford is for a managerial change.
What lies in store for senior figures Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, however, remains to be seen, with both under huge pressure.
Sky Sports say the pair will lead the process of appointing a new manager, which could come soon now.
