Mike Tomlin offers brutally honest advice to Aaron Glenn after latest Jets collapse
Mike Tomlin didn't hesitate to tell Aaron Glenn where the New York Jets were going wrong

Mike Tomlin has not coached in the NFL this season, but he did not need to be asked twice about what the New York Jets should do after another first-half collapse.

The Jets lost 28-25 to a Miami Dolphins team that entered Sunday at 0-5 and had not held a lead all season, and the way the half ended is what drew Tomlin’s attention. It comes after Tomlin weighed in on the Dallas Cowboys following a players-only meeting.

The Dolphins took over with 8:44 left in the second quarter and drove 15 plays and 91 yards, with Malik Willis scoring from two yards out, to make it 21-7 at halftime. Miami reached the two-minute warning at the Jets’ 32, and New York still had all three of its timeouts.

Aaron Glenn let the clock run out without using any of them, and the Jets went into the locker room with all three.

Glenn explained afterward that the staff thought the defense would get a stop. “We felt like we were going to stop them. And maybe we should have called our timeouts to get it back,” Glenn said. “That’s something that we should have done, is use our timeouts.”

Since Glenn became head coach, the Jets have been outscored 107-6 in the final two minutes of the first half, including 20-0 this season, and they were outscored 100-6 before Sunday’s drive.

Tomlin, asked about it, did not soften his answer. “If I were them, I would do two-minute every day of my life until further notice,” Tomlin said.

Glenn has acknowledged the responsibility. He has said before that managing that stretch belongs to the head coach, and after Sunday’s game, he said, “I’m highly disappointed. Disappointed in myself first and foremost defensively. Our fans deserve better than that, and that starts with me.”

He also called the defense’s start “really puzzling,” since Miami averaged 14 points per game entering Sunday and scored 14 in the first quarter.

The Jets did cut the deficit to 21-17 in the fourth quarter, but a 63-yard catch-and-run touchdown by rookie Caleb Douglas on the next series put the game out of reach.

The team is 2-5, and Glenn is 5-19 in 24 games as head coach, with a 0-8 record against AFC East opponents.

The offense had its own issues. Geno Smith threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns, and rookie Omar Cooper had a second straight 100-yard game, but Garrett Wilson finished with only three targets and none at halftime, and was seen shouting at passing game coordinator Seth Ryan.

New York also stalled at Miami’s 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, losing yards on two runs and taking a 12-yard sack before settling for a field goal. The Jets rank 31st in red zone efficiency.
