Jonah Jackson appeared headed toward his first missed start since joining the Bears.

He left Sunday’s win over Atlanta with a hip injury. An early report described him as week-to-week, and Chicago had only four days before its next game. The coaching staff was already answering questions about the players who could replace him.

By Wednesday, Jackson had no injury designation. The Bears’ starting right guard is set to play against New England on Thursday night, giving Chicago a welcome reversal at a position central to its offensive success.

Jackson’s progression on the injury report was steady: estimated non-participation Monday, limited participation Tuesday and full participation Wednesday. Chicago held walkthroughs throughout the week, so those listings were estimates rather than records of full practices.

Still, the final designation delivered the news that matters: the Bears expect their starting right guard to be available.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier in the week that Jackson had a hip-flexor injury and was considered week-to-week. Fowler said Thursday’s game was in doubt, though the issue wasn’t expected to be long-term.

The short turnaround made that a concerning combination.

Luke Newman finished the Atlanta game in Jackson’s place, playing 27 offensive snaps. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor also identified Jordan McFadden as an option, pointing to his starting experience in last season’s playoffs.

Chicago had alternatives. Keeping Jackson in the lineup is nevertheless a significant boost. His removal from the final injury report confirmed that the Bears weren’t entering Thursday with a questionable or doubtful designation attached to their right guard.

Jackson hasn’t missed a start since arriving in Chicago in 2025. That streak is now positioned to continue despite an injury that initially threatened to interrupt it.

His value shows up beside Darnell Wright

Taylor’s assessment of Jackson earlier in the week explained why his availability carries so much weight.

“Jonah brings so much to our offense,” Taylor said. “Just his mindset, his mentality, the play style. He’s everything we want to be about.”

The coordinator described how often Chicago’s examples of its preferred offensive identity feature the ball moving behind Jackson and right tackle Darnell Wright. Wright receives considerable attention for his work. Taylor made clear that the coaching staff recognizes how frequently Jackson contributes alongside him.

That partnership matters when Chicago needs difficult rushing yards, but its value extends to keeping the offense organized and protecting Caleb Williams. Familiarity between neighboring linemen can help with the communication and coordinated blocks required against a disciplined defensive front.

The Patriots will test that coordination. Ben Johnson praised New England’s interior defensive personnel Tuesday, describing them as difficult to move and identifying the defensive line as a foundation of the unit.

Having Jackson available preserves an established combination for that challenge.

Chicago still has a backfield absence to overcome

The positive Jackson update doesn’t erase every concern for the running game.

Kyle Monangai has been ruled out for a third consecutive game with thumb and toe injuries. He has contributed 324 rushing yards and three touchdowns this season, leaving Chicago without an important part of its backfield rotation again.

D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson remain the primary options. Taylor has explained that the Bears are mindful of preserving Swift over the season, helping account for Roschon’s continued involvement.

Jackson’s availability gives that rotation a better foundation.

The Bears won’t have every offensive contributor they want Thursday. But a player Taylor described as embodying their preferred style has made it through the short week without a game designation. After the outlook Chicago faced Monday, that is a meaningful lift before kickoff.
