Audi have confirmed that 18-year-old British talent Freddie Slater will make his Formula 1 weekend debut at the Mexican Grand Prix, before making a second appearance in Brazil. The youngster, regarded as one of the most promising drivers of the next generation, will take part in FP1 at both events behind the wheel of the R26.

Slater became the first driver to join the Audi Driver Development Programme earlier this year, with the German manufacturer supporting his progression through the junior categories. His upcoming appearances in Mexico City and São Paulo will mark another important step in his career, providing his first experience of an official Formula 1 practice session.

The Briton recently completed an impressive rookie campaign in Formula 3 with Trident Motorsport, finishing second in the championship after remaining in title contention until the season finale in Madrid in September. He secured eight podiums across eight consecutive race weekends, three pole positions and one Feature Race victory.

Slater will move up to Formula 2 with Invicta Racing in 2027, making his two F1 outings particularly valuable as he continues his development. The sessions will also form part of Audi's commitment to providing opportunities for young drivers in accordance with FIA regulations.

McNish explains why Audi have chosen Slater for F1 debut

Allan McNish, Audi's Racing Director and head of its Driver Development Programme, believes Slater has demonstrated sufficient progress to take the next step in his career.

"We have seen Freddie making great progress throughout recent years, both on and off the track; it is the right time for Freddie to step-up. These appearances in Mexico and Brazil will give him valuable experience of a Formula One race weekend, and another chance to continue his development before he steps up to Formula 2 next season. We are looking forward to seeing him in the R26 and supporting him through these two important FP1 sessions."

For Slater, the announcement represents the fulfilment of a childhood ambition, although the British driver is already focused on making the most of his opportunity.

"Getting behind the wheel of a Formula One car at a Grand Prix weekend is a big moment for me and something I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid. I’ve learned a lot this year, and these Free Practice outings with Audi Revolut F1 Team will be another opportunity to keep gaining on-track experience."

The 18-year-old also thanked Audi for its continued support and outlined his priorities for the two sessions: "Being part of the Audi Driver Development Programme has already given me some incredible opportunities, and I am grateful for their trust and support. I’m really looking forward to getting out on track: my focus will be on doing the best job I can, helping the team with its programme and taking as many learnings as possible from both sessions."

Audi recently confirmed that its current driver line-up will remain unchanged for the 2027 season, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto continuing as team-mates for a second consecutive year under the German manufacturer's name.
