To make matters worse for Celtic, it’s Europa League action on Thursday night, and this could get ugly once again.
On paper, Celtic’s showdown with Besiktas was always going to be one of the more difficult games to deal with.
But now, Martin O’Neill has to try and beat the Turkish giants against the backdrop of Celtic’s defeat to Falkirk on Sunday, and also losing all three of their Europa League matches so far this season.
While Celtic were losing to Falkirk on Sunday, Besiktas were on the road and making the trip to face Kasımpaşa.
What is interesting is that Besiktas boss Vincenzo Italiano opted to start Oh from the bench, as he was introduced into the action after an hour.
Arsenal title-winner Leandro Trossard opened the scoring for the Turkish giants, with former Juventus star Dusan Vlahović doubling his side’s lead, before Besiktas conceded two cheap goals and dropped valuable points.
With Oh coming off the bench, it probably indicates that he will start at Celtic Park, because he has started his side’s last two European matches, including their draw against Crystal Palace last time out.
While Celtic are top of the table in Scotland, as O’Neill keeps telling the fans, everything isn’t rosy in the garden, including in Europe.
The Hoops are facing elimination from the Europa League league phase, and could be bottom by the time Besiktas head back home on Thursday night.
From Besiktas’s three matches in the Europa League this term, they have two wins, including Oh’s brace against Hoffenheim, and a draw against Palace.
Not only are the Turkish giants scoring for fun, but from their 19 matches in all competitions so far, they have only lost four times, including a second-leg qualifier, where they already had a substantial lead, to get into the Europa League.
| Besiktas games played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goals scored | Goals conceded |
| 19 | 13 | 2 | 4 | 37 | 18 |
As mentioned above, in Besiktas’ only Europa League away tie this season, they put three goals past Hoffenheim, with Oh scoring twice and earning an assist.
One positive for the Hoops is that all of their defeats have been on the road, but when they get their engine going, they like to put the ball into the back of the net.
