Former Rangers man signs for English Championship side

The former Rangers midfielder had been clubless since parting ways with Charlton Athletic near the end of the summer transfer window.

Despite captaining the Addicks to League One promotion last year, the 30-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements as they bolstered their squad for the Championship.

Preston's recent appointment, Graham Alexander, had shown interest in Docherty, and the signing was completed today.

Docherty shared his excitement about joining Preston North End.

He told the club's website: "I’m really proud to be here, to have this badge on my chest and to be part of a club that’s steeped in history.

"When I told my family, they were all excited and willing me to get it done.

"I’m just thankful that we managed to do it.

"Coming down from Scotland and playing in England, Preston’s a very good team to get to for my family, and I’ve always kept an eye on them."

Docherty has already been training with the side and feels positive about what lies ahead.

He said: "From the moment I walked in here, I got a really good feeling from speaking to the manager and all the coaching staff.

"When I see how passionate the manager is about turning our current situation around, it excites me, and I want to also help change things.

"I see real quality in the dressing room, and I know we can improve if we keep working hard.

"The manager’s training demands are very high, and I’ve come in and really enjoyed it.

"I’ve enjoyed the soreness after it, I’ve enjoyed the tiredness after it, but I feel much better for it, and all the lads do too.

"The boys are saying they’re getting fitter, which is massive in this league, and I just can’t wait to get going alongside them out on the pitch."

Manager Graham Alexander is also pleased with the new addition to his squad.

He said: "We’re really pleased to bring Greg in.

"He’s been a captain, won promotions, and knows the game inside out.

"Greg’s vocal, fit, and motivated, which are all the key things you look for in a professional footballer.

"He has settled into the group really quickly and has a real willingness to show what he can do."

Docherty's signing is expected to add strength and depth to the squad as they aim to improve their form in the ongoing season.
