Chelsea make major Estevao decision after Xabi Alonso is forced into U-turn

Chelsea appear determined to make sure one of their brightest young talents doesn't go anywhere.

After weeks of uncertainty surrounding Estevao's lack of playing time under Xabi Alonso, the club have reportedly taken the first step to securing his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian winger has endured a frustrating start to the campaign, with his limited game time raising questions about his place in Alonso's long term plans. There has even been suggestions that the youngster could move on in January.

However, his recent performance against Manchester United may have changed things with Chelsea now reportedly preparing to reward the teenager with a new contract.

Chelsea working on new Estevao contract after impressive display

According to Spanish outlet AS, Chelsea are working on a contract renewal for Estevao, which would include a significant increase to his salary.

The report claims the Blues have no intention of letting the situation develop into an exit, with the club viewing the Brazilian as a central figure in their future plans. They want him to become the face of the team.

It follows a difficult period for the 19-year-old, who had struggled to get opportunities under Alonso. His lack of minutes became a talking point among fans, particularly after he was left unused despite spending much of the second half warming up during Chelsea's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool.

But Estevao was handed a starting role against Manchester United and certainly made the most of it.

He played almost 87 minutes, completed half of his attempted dribbles, registered three key passes leading to shots and won half of his duels. Two goals were also ruled out for marginal offside decisions.

It was an impressive response to his limited opportunities, and Alonso was quick to praise him afterwards. The Chelsea manager said the youngster had shown he deserved more playing time and had given the perfect response.

Xabi Alonso has a decision to make over Estevao

There is still a question over how Estevao fits into Alonso's preferred system. The manager has generally favoured two attacking midfielders behind a central striker rather than using traditional wingers, with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers occupying those positions.

That has made it difficult for Estevao to find a regular place, despite his obvious technical ability and potential.

However, the performance against United showed that he can offer something different when given the opportunity. Playing closer to the action, rather than being restricted to a conventional wide role, allowed him to demonstrate his dribbling, creativity and ability to cause problems between the lines.

Chelsea clearly believe there is a special player waiting to emerge, and a new contract would confirm that confidence.

The important thing now is making sure the teenager gets the opportunities to match the club's ambition. Offering him improved terms is one thing, but keeping him happy and developing his talent will require more than a pay rise.

Estevao has given Alonso plenty to think about. Chelsea will hope this is the beginning of a much bigger role for him.
