The Minnesota Timberwolves kept their perfect start going in their home opener on Sunday, blowing out the Toronto Raptors 117-94 at Target Center to improve to 3-0 after road wins in Miami and Orlando.
Anthony Edwards scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, and a 35-15 third quarter turned a 55-47 halftime lead into a runaway. The Raptors were without Kawhi Leonard, who sat out with left knee swelling, and dropped to 2-1.
But by the end of the night, the talk around the game had turned to Scottie Barnes and an unusual line in the box score.
Barnes played 28 minutes, and nothing he put up went in. Five of his misses came from beyond the arc, and he never got to the free-throw line. No player in the game matched his steals total (4), but he also committed 3 turnovers and finished at minus-27, the lowest plus-minus of anyone on the floor.
The night was a sharp turn from how his season began. The forward opened with 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting in a 135-92 rout of the Chicago Bulls. Two nights later, he followed with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists in a 112-102 road win over the Washington Wizards.
One fan wasted no time, remarking that Barnes had been “Cooked by the Wolves.”
Anothertook aim at the expectations that came with pairing Barnes and Leonard: “No way people said this guy was supposed to help Kawhi get another ring.”
Taking a wider view, another user saw a double standard in how the night was being received: “If Bam Adebayo did this, y’all would’ve slandered him on every social media platform and mention it until he retired… But since it’s not the Miami Heat, no one cares.”
Not everyone piled on, as one came to the forward’s defense with a touch of sarcasm, firing back at an account pointing out his lackluster stat line: “Delete now, he was trolling.”
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch also reacted to the shooting line after the game, saying, “Sorry, I didn’t realize that Barnes was 0 for 12. So sorry, say that again.”
The Timberwolves held the Raptors to 38% shooting, including 10-of-38 from beyond the arc.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajaković also offered an explanation for the 0-of-12 night.
“I don’t think they did anything, to be honest with you, that they got him off the game. He just missed his shots. All the shots that he took in the game, I thought they were good shots,” Rajaković asserted.
“This is not going to happen again to Scottie. Scottie is going to make those shots next time. I didn’t see anything special that they did to him to get him off balance.”
The Raptors return home Wednesday to host the Orlando Magic at Scotiabank Arena, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
