Harvey Elliott received a warm reception from Liverpool fans on his return to Anfield following a difficult year away, barely playing any minutes during his loan spell at Aston Villa

Harvey Elliott received a warm welcome from Anfield as he returned for the first time since his loan departure last summer.

The 23-year-old had been among the Reds' most promising up-and-coming talents since his move to the club's academy from Fulham at the age of 16 in 2019. However, his lack of game time under Arne Slot in 2024/25 meant a loan or permanent move was on the cards 12 months ago.

Despite reported interest from the likes of RB Leipzig, Elliott ultimately completed a loan move to Aston Villa on deadline day. The deal included a mandatory purchase obligation if he reached a certain number of appearances.

Villa boss Unai Emery seemingly decided very early on that the club could not afford to spend the reported £35 million ($47 million) to sign the attacking midfielder on a permanent basis, and his game time was limited as a result.

He made just nine appearances across all competitions for the Midlands club in what was ultimately a very difficult year for the player.

As such, he returned to Liverpool this summer and has been involved throughout the Reds' preseason campaign, often as a substitute in the more recent friendlies. Against Monaco at Anfield on Sunday, he replaced Dominik Szoboszlai with 15 minutes left to play in a game the Reds ultimately went on to lose 3-2.

When Elliott took to the pitch late on at Anfield, the first time he had done so in more than a year, he was greeted by a very warm reception from the crowd.

The cheers and ovations were an understandable nod to the difficult year he has endured, during which a year of his career was disappointingly wasted on the Villa bench.

Whether he has a long-term future at Liverpool remains to be seen. With almost a year having passed without many meaningful minutes, Elliott's performances in preseason have understandably been relatively uninspiring.

There have been no meaningful links with a move away from the club so far this summer, either permanently or on loan.

In the last couple of days, tentative reports have linked the player with a possible switch to Leeds, but it appears another late-window move could be on the cards once again.

Liverpool, meanwhile, was defeated 3-2 in its penultimate preseason friendly. The Reds initially took the lead through Alexander Isak before Florian Wirtz added a second, but another disappointing second-half collapse leaves head coach Andoni Iraola with plenty to ponder.

Next week, the Reds will take on Serie A side Como in a doubleheader of friendlies, one of which will be played behind closed doors. Then, all eyes will be on Liverpool's first game of the season as it prepares to take on Newcastle at St. James' Park.

While Elliott's future may be uncertain, it's clear Anfield has a lot of time for a player who has shown plenty of promise over the years, has never shied away from his love for the club and has regularly been dealt some pretty harsh cards.
