Kyren Williams seems unhappy with his role after Rams' loss

When you have an abundance of playmakers and only one football, it can create some problems. And for the 2-4 Los Angeles Rams, it appears at least one player is unhappy with his role.

Kyren Williams has been the starting running back since 2023, but over the last two seasons, Blake Corum has eaten into his playing time. Williams still plays more snaps from week to week, but the carry split has been tight in certain games, including Sunday’s 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

After the game, Williams mentioned that the Rams need to have energy on every single drive.

“Self-inflicted wounds, not starting fast, not having that energy every single drive,” he said.

He was then asked why he thinks the energy is inconsistent from possession to possession.

“Can’t tell you, bro. Probably because I’m not out there,” he said.

Last season, Williams played 68% of the offensive snaps. This season, he’s played 70%. Both numbers are down from his peak of 87% in 2024.

It’s almost unrealistic to expect a running back to play nearly 90% of the snaps each and every week, which is why the Rams have been giving Corum more work. But Williams is someone who wants to ball in his hands every chance he gets.

For a player who’s always about the team first and was voted a captain this year, it’s surprising to hear him call out his role.

He was asked a follow-up question about whether he wishes he had the playing time that he saw last year and previous years.

“I can’t really call that. That’s not on my – it’s not on me,” he said. “But I just think no matter what, we’ve got to continue to have the energy. When plays are made, be excited, be happy so we can uplift not only the offense, but the defense and special teams and being able to have the camaraderie where we’re playing off each other. I think that’s going to allow us to be where we want to be.”

Against the Cardinals, Williams played 71% of the snaps and had 10 carries for 50 yards. Blake Corum played 29% and had nine carries for 42 yards. They were both effective, but to Williams’ point, maybe he wants more carries beyond just playing more snaps.
