Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a potential major blow following the Saturday lunchtime defeat to Leeds United, with the Athletic reporting that Mathys Tel limped to the team coach on crutches having been substituted off in the first half.
Tel was involved in the biggest controversy of the game at Elland Road when the Tottenham forward was on the end of a poor tackle from the hosts' Jayden Bogle in the first half, but after a lengthy review by VAR, it was decided that John Brooks' on-field decision of no card would stand.
The Frenchman tried to carry on after the challenge, but he was taken off two minutes before the break, unable to carry on following the tackle on his Achilles.
Roberto De Zerbi's side went on to lose the match as they suffered their first defeat in four games, but the biggest talking point was whether Bogle should have seen red.
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean claimed on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday that it was '100%' a dismissal for the defender, with many seeming to agree with his point of view.
De Zerbi will be frustrated about that, given they would have ended up playing the majority of the game against 10 men, but he will also be annoyed if he has lost Tel for any significant amount of time.
According to the Athletic, posting on X, as the media waited to speak to Leeds centre-back Tarik Muharemovic, Tel was seen hobbling back to their coach on crutches with a protective boot on.
There has been no update so far from De Zerbi on how serious the injury could be, but the sight of crutches and a protective boot is always a concern.
Following a stop-start to the campaign, Tel had started Tottenham's last three Premier League matches, scoring in the 2-0 win at Chelsea last month.
This is a breaking story. More to follow...
