The Baltimore Ravens began their short preparation for Thursday night’s matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars with all three quarterbacks listed on the injury report.
Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano was limited during Monday’s walkthrough because of an ankle injury, adding another layer of uncertainty to a quarterback room already dealing with significant losses. Tyler Huntley did not participate because of a toe injury. At the same time, Lamar Jackson was listed as a nonparticipant with the right thumb injury that requires surgery and will send him to injured reserve. Fagnano finished Sunday’s 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills after Jackson and Huntley exited during the first half. He completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards with an interception and a lost fumble while absorbing three of Buffalo’s four sacks.
The Ravens signed Austin Reed to the practice squad Monday, giving them another quarterback familiar with the offense. Reed would need to be elevated or signed to the 53-man roster before he could play against Jacksonville.
Jackson suffered his injury on Baltimore’s first offensive snap and could miss the remainder of the season. Huntley sustained what is believed to be turf toe during the second quarter, leaving Fagnano to make his NFL debut with limited preparation.
Fagnano spent most of the previous week running Baltimore’s scout-team offense to simulate Josh Allen rather than working with the Ravens’ starters. Despite the difficult circumstances, he completed early passes to Josh Cuevas and Ja’Kobi Lane before Buffalo’s pressure disrupted the offense.
His limited participation provides some optimism that he can play Thursday, but Baltimore has little time to evaluate his ankle or prepare an alternative. Huntley’s availability will remain another major storyline throughout the abbreviated practice week.
Kicker Tyler Loop did not participate because of a right groin injury. Head coach Jesse Minter said Loop could “potentially” be placed on injured reserve, clarifying why Jake Moody is expected to kick against Jacksonville.
Moody did not defeat Loop in a competition or take the job solely because of Loop’s recent misses. The immediate change is injury-driven. Moody is on the practice squad and must be elevated or signed to the active roster before Thursday. Loop made one of two field-goal attempts against Buffalo, missing from 34 yards before converting a 26-yard attempt. He also sent the opening kickoff out of bounds. The injury report contained several other concerns. Safety Jaylinn Hawkins joined Jackson, Huntley and Loop as injury-related nonparticipants because of a knee issue. Trey Hendrickson, Justice Hill, Vega Ioane, Roger Rosengarten, John Simpson and Roquan Smith were among the players listed as limited.
Fagnano’s status remains the most immediate concern. With Jackson unavailable and Huntley unable to participate Monday, the Ravens may have to prepare an injured rookie and a newly signed practice-squad quarterback for a game carrying significant implications for their season.
