NFL legend Calvin Johnson believes that Seattle Seahawks superstar wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has the ability to break his NFL single-season receiving yards record this season, as Smith-Njigba is currently on a historic pace that has him slated to do so if maintained for the rest of the year.
As a recent guest on the “Up & Adams Show,” Johnson spoke highly of Smith-Njigba and let it be known the belief that he has in the Seahawks’ dynamo to break his record.
Johnson established the league record in 2012 with 1,964 receiving yards that season as a member of the Detroit Lions. More than a decade later, the mark remains the benchmark for wide receivers in the league, but Smith-Njigba’s production has him on line to break the record convincingly this season.
Through the first seven games of the year, Smith-Njigba has recorded 867 receiving yards, averaging 123.9 yards per game. At that pace, he is projected to finish with approximately 2,106 yards by the end of the season, well above Johnson’s record output by a significant margin.
Smith-Njigba also opened last season on a record-breaking pace, as he collected 819 receiving yards through the first seven games of that season. However, he finished the 2025 season with 1,793 yards, falling short of Johnson’s record. His latest hot start gives him another opportunity to make NFL history, provided he maintains his production throughout the remainder of the season.
