RASMUS HOJLUND has shot down the Globe Soccer Awards for twisting his comments about Cristiano Ronaldo.
This has been a turbulent international break for CR7, who stormed out of the Portuguese camp after finishing the 2-1 win over Norway as an unused substitute.
Hojlund then hit Ronaldo‘s trademark ‘siuuu’ celebration after scoring for Denmark against Portugal on Thursday.
Former Manchester United striker Hojlund admitted it was a show of support to his childhood hero, saying: “I just wanted to dedicate my goal to my idol.
“For everything Cristiano is going through at this point in his career, he will never be forgotten.”
Globe Soccer – an awards organisation reportedly with close ties to Ronaldo’s former agent, Jorge Mendes – published a slightly different version of the quote on their official Instagram account.
It read: “I just wanted to send a strong message to the Portuguese national team, that if they don’t value Cristiano, there are many people in the world who still admire him.”
But Hojlund ruthlessly shut them down, commenting: “I didn’t say this.”
Ronaldo maintains a close relationship with Mendes despite the pair going their separate ways in 2022.
Mendes has won Globe Soccer’s Agent of the Year award 13 times, with Ronaldo picking up their Player of the Year gong on six occasions.
The Portugal veteran, 41, was also named their Player of the Century.
Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales before being left out of the victory over Norway and storming out entirely after manager Jorge Jesus admitted he would not start the next game against Denmark, which Portugal won 4-2.
Ronaldo was visibly wound up on the sideline after being asked to warm up for around half an hour without being brought on in the Norway game.
Jesus, who had a tense post-match exchange with Hojlund after his celebration, insists that he is “the one who makes the decisions” and “the rules are the same for everyone”.
But his rift with Ronaldo is garnering unwanted attention.
The former United, Real Madrid and Juventus marksman wrote on Instagram: “After the press conference of the national team, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have made the decision to leave the national team training camp.
“In due course, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I always dedicated myself.
“Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my team-mates good luck, without exception.”
