Celtic have earned a UEFA bonus payment for their 3-2 win over Besiktas in the Europa League.
Celtic knew a victory was required if they were to have any real chance of progressing to the knockout phase of the competition.
After a fairly uneventful first half at Celtic Park, things sprang to life in the second 45. Besiktas took the lead, then Callum Osmand equalised just 43 seconds after coming on. Camilo Duran then fired the Celts ahead for the first time on the night, but it looked to be heading for a draw when the visitors levelled five minutes from the end.
There is plenty more in our latest Celtic news and transfers coverage.
Three minutes later, Duran had other ideas. Celtic attacked in droves, with the Colombian controlling the ball in the danger area before coolly slotting it home.
All the reaction has, of course, been on the second-half performance and the victory itself, but there’s another welcome boost for the club.
The win means a UEFA bonus payment of €450k (£375k) has been pocketed.
UEFA offer bonuses to clubs for wins or draws in the league phase of the Europa League.
That amount is on top of the €4.31m paid to every club involved in the league phase of the competition this season.
Up next is a trip to face Portuguese second-tier side Torreense, who have two wins from four so far. Should Celtic beat them, another €450k would be banked.
Qualification for the knockout phase won’t be on their mind just yet, but doing so would mean an additional €300k from the UEFA prize pot. Regardless of their final position, the Hoops are guaranteed a payment for their final position in the league phase.
It won’t be the first thing on supporters’ minds, but it’s a small reward for securing all three points.
It’s back to domestic duty on Sunday, with Kilmarnock travelling to Glasgow’s east end. O’Neill will have plenty of food for thought after his substitutes’ heroics on Thursday.
They host St Mirren the following weekend before their trip to Portugal for matchday five of this season’s Europe League. Celtic know that one win on the road, at the very least, is crucial to stand a chance of being amongst the top 24 sides who progress to the next round.
