Chad Kelly has turned his professional football career around in Canada.
The former Denver Broncos quarterback recently received a five-year, $5,555,250 contract extension from the Toronto Argonauts. That makes Kelly the first $1 million player in the CFL’s salary cap era, according to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.com.
Kelly, 32, was selected by the Broncos out of Ole Miss with the final pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He spent a year and a half in Denver before being released after he was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespassing in 2018. After that, Kelly spent time with the Indianapolis Colts before moving to Canada in 2022.
Kelly has won two Grey Cup titles and he was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2023. His 5,067 passing yards and 33 passing touchdowns both rank third this season, and he's played fewer games than the leaders in those categories. In four seasons (61 games) in Canada, Kelly has totaled 11,938 passing yards and 68 touchdowns.
