J.J. McCarthy made his second appearance with the Giants after a late September trade. Here's how he fared against the Saints.
The New York Giants keep trying to make J.J. McCarthy happen. So far, both parties have been unsuccessful.
For a second straight week, Big Blue deployed McCarthy for a few packages against the New Orleans Saints amid Jameis Winston's fourth start of the season. As was the case in last week's tie against the Washington Commanders, the plays New York ran while McCarthy was on the field in Week 6 were largely ineffective.
McCarthy, the former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, joined the Giants in a late September trade. He made his debut with his second team in Week 5, playing four snaps against the Commanders.
Despite completing both of his pass attempts, neither counted in the official box score – both were wiped out by penalties. McCarthy also rushed twice for two total yards.
Against the Saints in Week 6, McCarthy played one snap in the first half. In the second half, the Giants benched Winston in the fourth quarter to give McCarthy more looks behind center. The former Viking completed his first official pass attempt but threw an interception three plays later.
Here's a complete look at how McCarthy played in his second outing as a Giant:
McCarthy's lone play in the first half against the Saints was a read-option. The former Vikings quarterback kept the ball and ran to the left side, only to be tackled two yards behind the line of scrimmage.
In the fourth quarter, McCarthy completed his first pass attempt with the Giants, but he threw his first interception of the season three plays later.
