Arsenal secured a victory which was hard-fought once again against Hull City and required them to hammer away at the Tigers until they finally caved.

The Gunners had plenty of chances in the first half to take the lead but fluffed their lines, continuing the question marks over a lack of clinical edge. But the VAR call is what has baffled so many, with referee Farai Hallam being sent to the monitor to make an offside call, which will be discussed long into the week.

The home side continued their barrage of attacks from the left and right, and the breakthrough eventually came through captain Martin Odegaard finishing well after Noni Madueke’s shot was initially parried.

Here is how football.london rated the performances...

David Raya – Had very little to do during the game, with the ball almost exclusively camped in the Hull box, especially in the second half. But remained alert and had to be when the ball squirmed to him was a tight angle on the right. 6

Jurrien Timber – Spent plenty of time in the final third of the field, trying to add further numbers to break the Tigers’ stubborn defence down. 7

Ezri Konsa – The England centre-half has been an excellent addition and it has been his presence and defensive consistency keeping the play progressing from the back. 7

Gabriel – Solid at the back and he needed to be at the end as crosses continued to ply away at Arsenal’s box. 7

Riccardo Calafiori – Provided his usual chaotic contribution, but it didn’t come with enough impact on the game itself. 6

Declan Rice – Had a couple of big chances to score but couldn’t find the net and was brought off after 60 minutes… with question marks over the reason. 6

Bruno Guimaraes – A tale of two halves for the Brazilian who improved considerably in the second, and more so once Rice had come off. Was playing some really tidy and incisive passes around the Hull box, causing them plenty of problems. 7

Martin Odegaard – One of those games where the skipper was trying every trick in the book for his teammates, but when given the service, they couldn’t find the execution. And so it was he who found the breakthrough, the liveliest man in the box to pounce and score. 9

Noni Madueke – If you fail try and try again. Madueke never gave up and just kept going, with crosses and shots and eventually it eroded down the Tigers and led to the opener. 8

Kai Havertz – Played through on goal near the end of the first half, the German tried to cute with a cut-back touch but is tackled. Should’ve just taken the chance on. 5

Christos Tzolis – Had a frustrating first half, misplacing several passes and failed to spot a good run of Havertz on a counter and smashed a great volleyed chance high into the stands – lacking sharpness after his recent injury, perhaps. 5

Substitutes

Mikel Merino – Should’ve had an assist after a great flick to Madueke near the end of the game. 6

Viktor Gyokeres – Didn’t have much impact, had one shot which was comfortably saved. Some nice hold-up play to relieve pressure. 6

Eberechi Eze – A couple of moments where he tried to find the goal but didn’t have his shooting boots on. 5

Piero Hincapie – The contrast needed to help win the game and provide the overlaps that grounded down their opponents, forcing the question. 6

Martin Zubimendi - Came on late in the game. n/a
