Georgia reclaimed No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday after winning 42-7 at Ole Miss, while Ohio State dropped to No. 21 after losing at home to Oregon.
The Bulldogs took over the top spot for the second time this season after Notre Dame defeated No. 1 Miami 31-24. Georgia collected 53 first-place votes, with Utah receiving 12 and Notre Dame five.
Miami was the fourth team to lose the No. 1 ranking this season, the most in one season since 2008. Georgia spent one week at No. 1 before Auburn upset the Bulldogs on Oct. 17, though they remained in the top five.
Ohio State’s slide followed a 41-28 defeat to Oregon at home, sending the Buckeyes down from No. 11. Ohio State began the season at No. 1 and stood second two weeks ago, while Oregon was the preseason No. 2. The Buckeyes lost at USC the week before facing Oregon.
Ohio State has not placed this low since 2014, apart from the 2020 pandemic season. Both preseason top-two teams have lost three of their first nine games for the first time since 1950, CBS Sports reported.
The Buckeyes are using their backup quarterback after losing Julian Sayin, Sports Illustrated reported. Sayin’s status was not immediately known.
Oregon returned at No. 18 after five weeks outside the poll.
Utah climbed one place to No. 2 by beating rival BYU 28-20, giving the Utes their highest regular-season AP ranking and their best position since the final poll of the 2008 season. Utah, coached by Morgan Scalley, is one of two unbeaten teams left in major college football.
BYU fell five places to No. 12 after its second loss, having occupied No. 2 in the Oct. 18 poll.
Notre Dame advanced one place to No. 3 after beating Miami, which dropped to No. 5 with its first loss. Notre Dame has the lowest ranking for a top-five team fresh off a win over No. 1 since Auburn rose from No. 4 to No. 3 after defeating Alabama in 2013.
AP voter Javon Edmonds said in comments published by FOX Sports that head-to-head results guided his choices of Utah second, Notre Dame third and BYU 12th. “The resume has to matter right now, and there's no point in playing the games if head-to-head doesn't matter,” Edmonds said.
UCLA reached 9-0 for the first time since 1998 and rose to No. 4, its best ranking since 2001. Idle Indiana stayed at No. 6, making it the only team to hold its place from the previous week.
Alabama and Texas both moved up two spots after winning on the road at LSU and Missouri, respectively. Tennessee climbed to No. 9 after defeating Kentucky 34-6, while Texas Tech rejoined the top 10 with a 53-48 victory over West Virginia.
Georgia is 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Southeastern Conference and holds the top spot in this week’s Coaches Poll. Ole Miss fell from No. 12 to No. 19 after losing to Georgia.
The SEC went from 10 ranked teams to eight after losses knocked Missouri and Florida out of the poll.
Next week, Utah visits No. 22 Arizona, Texas travels to No. 24 LSU, and No. 15 USC plays at Indiana. No. 11 Wake Forest visits No. 25 SMU in a game with ACC championship game implications, according to the AP.
The AP noted that Utah has not won in Tucson since 2021, while Texas can go 5-0 against Top 25 opponents with a win.
