After almost two decades, the Houston Comets are back in the WNBA. And apparently, they return with spoilers for the 2027 WNBA season. On October 30, a clip featuring a Comets front office representative made the rounds on social media, with fans speculating she may have inadvertently revealed key dates for next season, including a potential date for the league’s opening night.

“Somewhere between early and mid-December is when the WNBA should be releasing the 2027 schedule… April 12th will be the WNBA draft. The team will start reporting to training camp on the first of May, which will be the opening of the season. We feel very confident that we will open the season at home at Toyota Centre. So mark your calendars for that first weekend,” said the Comets representative in the clip.

While the league already announced details of the 2027 WNBA Draft, the Comets front office representative revealed information about the release of the 2027 WNBA season’s schedule and, more importantly, the start date. The news sparked commotion, catching the attention of a WNBA insider as well. However, according to him, the alleged leak from the Comets’ front office remains unconfirmed as of today.

“The 2027 draft will be on April 12, but there is no confirmed start date yet for the 2027 regular season, per league spokesperson. A May 1 season start date is not confirmed, contrary to what the Comets say here,” Front Office Sports reporter Colin Salao wrote on X.

If we look at the last five seasons, the WNBA has tipped off on May 8, May 16, May 14, May 19, and May 6. According to the Comets front office, the next season will start on May 1, which has never happened before. This is why the Comets front office’s revelation has gone viral across the WNBA fraternity and beyond, with fans questioning whether the league is planning an earlier-than-usual start to the season.

Apart from the FOS reporter, WNBA broadcaster Robin Lundberg also reacted to the supposed leaks from the Comets front office and speculated on the reasons for an early start date.

“I don’t think we knew that the schedule would be released in December. So, that will be a little mini event,” Lundberg said about the alleged 2027 WNBA season’s schedule release.

“So May 1st, first week of the season. And why is that? Well, the season is expanding, right? The (number of) games played is going up to 50 starting next season,” the broadcaster commented.

In June, the WNBA announced it would expand its regular season schedule from 44 games to 50 games beginning with the 2027 season.

“Demand for the WNBA has never been greater, and expanding to a 50-game regular season reflects the extraordinary momentum we are seeing across the league. This move reflects our commitment to growing the game and creating more opportunities for fans to watch the best players in the world and experience the extraordinary talent and competition that define the WNBA,” Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said.

Lundberg’s hunch makes sense. With a 14% increase in games from this season, 2027 will mark the most regular-season games in the league’s 30-year history, up from 28 games during the inaugural 1997 season. Moreover, the latest CBA allows for a potential further expansion to 52 regular-season games by 2029, coinciding with future franchise growth, including new teams in Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029), and Philadelphia (2030).

The 2026 WNBA season is not even over yet, but with Connecticut relocating to Houston, the regular season adding six more games, and now leaks from the Comets’ front office, the 2027 WNBA season could be the biggest in league history.
