Youri Tielemans backs Michael Carrick at Man United: 'We don't want a big change'

Youri Tielemans insisted the Manchester United squad were happy for Michael Carrick to stay as manager amid the club's worst run since 2015.

There were widespread exceptions that Carrick would be the first Premier League manager of the season to be sacked after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth followed another dismal display in a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League.

But the United hierarchy opted not to make a drastic decision, instead giving Carrick, who was at United from 2006 until 2018 as a player, time to turn things around.

Tielemans joined United from Aston Villa in the summer as one of three midfield signings and he insists that one of the main reasons for deciding to make the move to Old Trafford was Carrick.

"I came here partly because of him, because he wanted me here, he wants me to help the team out," he told TNT Sports.

"So I am very happy for him to stay and the whole group, we don't want a sudden change.

"We don't want a big change that is going to disrupt things more than they are, we just need stability, we need to keep working hard and then it's going to turn at some point."

Things turned ugly after United's thrashing on Lake Como, with Bruno Fernandes lashing out at Carrick's tactics after being taken off.

That resulted in the Portuguese midfielder being dropped to the bench for the defeat to Bournemouth.

With United facing Chelsea on Saturday, there is much speculation on whether United's captain will be back into the starting XI and leading the side and Carrick himself has said he sees no reason he won't be.

"Absolutely no issue with Bruno [Fernandes]. We've moved forward, we look forward to the game," Carrick told TNT Sports.

"He's committed to this football club, he has been for a long period of time, as I have done, and between us and the players and the staff, we've got to pull through this and when we do, we will be stronger for it."

After taking on the United job on a temporary basis last season, Carrick roared United into the top four and back into Champions League football.

That saw him given the job on a permanent basis and expectations were for United to be in and around the top four once more.

But a shock 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull set the tone of a dire start to the season, in which United have won just one of their opening eight Premier League matches.

Carrick is adamant that he is not listening to the outside noise around his job security, with the players his sole focus.

"My responsibility is the players," he said. "The outside is not anything for me to focus on.

"I know what we can affect, I know what we need to improve. I know as a group, leading a group, what help they need a little bit as well and a bit of guidance at certain times and dealing with certain things.

"Part of my direct role is them, who I care about and can affect the most directly, and, of course, we spoke.

"We have meetings as we do every single week, but some of the meetings go in different ways, depending on results, the situation and the feeling.

"The boys, I have to say, are hungry. We're hurting because we haven't won enough football games, but there's an intensity, there's a bit of an edge, there's a disappointment, there's a hunger to do better, for sure."

United's match at Chelsea is swiftly followed by Tuesday's Champions League match against Roma, which they head into following back-to-back losses away to Atletico Madrid and Como.

Reflecting on the start of a week that saw his job come under intense pressure, the head coach said: "To be honest, disappointment from the game, the result, initial disappointment. That's pretty clear.

"The way the game went and the result, dealing with that is the main thing.

"What could we have done better? What could we improve on? What can we make the difference with?

"Then focusing on getting back to training with the players and preparing for the next game, for Chelsea, and a big week ahead, really. That's been my main focus. How can we make the difference?"
