Ex-Washington Standout/Assistant Coach Earns First G-League Victory

Former Washington Huskies star forward turned assistant coach Quincy Pondexter notched his first win as a head coach after Friday night's 127-102 victory for the Windy City Bulls over the Noblesville Boom.

No different than when he began his playing career for the Huskies two decades ago, the NBA G League organization got off to a resounding start to the 2026-27 season with seven players scoring in double figures to secure the 25-point win at home.

A first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2010 and nine-year NBA veteran with the New Orleans Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies, Pelicans, Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, Pondexter spent the past season with the Huskies after one season at USC as an assistant coach, after he began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2021 under former coach Mike Hopkins.

His decision to accept a head coaching role with the Windy City Bulls, a G League affiliate of the Bulls, came late in August after it was expected that the ex-Husky would remain on Danny Sprinkle's staff for the 2026-27 season.

Although the organization began last season with a victory in its season opener and subsequently earned wins in its first four games under ex-coach Billy Donovan III, the team finished with a 15-21 overall record in the regular season after the Tip-Off Tournament, which led to the decision to bring in Pondexter.

Houston Mallette, a former standout guard at Pepperdine and Alabama, scored a game-high 26 points off the bench to lead the team in scoring, with much of his damage done behind the three-point line, going 6-for-6 from deep. Ex-USC forward Drew Peterson added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Coincidentally, as Pondexter found success in his debut with the Bulls, another former UW forward, Keion Brooks Jr., watched from the bench in the 25-point victory, one of four players not to play for the Boom Friday night.
