Jayden Bogle has been subjected to horrific racist abuse on social media following Saturday’s victory against Tottenham Hotspur, prompting a strong Leeds United club statement and vow.
Bogle’s boot caught Tottenham forward Mathys Tel on his Achilles midway through the first half of Saturday’s Premier League clash, referee John Brooks awarding a foul but no yellow card.
The incident was then checked by VAR for a possible red card but Bogle avoided any further punishment after a four-minute check.
Tel, meanwhile, who stayed down for treatment, initially attempted to play on but the Spurs attacker was forced off injured a few minutes later.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi then said post-match that Tel had suffered a bad injury that would need a medical check and Leeds United have now revealed that Bogle was subjected to vile racist abuse on social media in the aftermath of Saturday’s game.
The club have been able to share screenshots of the messages of abuse, one of which reads “I hope someone injures your two useless children”.
Another reads “or rape your wife”.
Several others contain emojis of monkeys, bananas or gorillas.
A statement from Leeds United read: “Leeds United Football Club are appalled at the disgusting, racist social media abuse Jayden Bogle suffered following Saturday’s Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur.
“Leeds United condemns this behaviour in the strongest possible terms. There is no place for racism in football or society.
“The club will work with the Premier League and relevant authorities to identify the individuals and push for the strongest possible action to be taken against them.
“Jayden has the full and unconditional support of the club and his teammates, and we all stand with him at this time.
“Nobody should ever be subjected to racist abuse.”
