Arsenal beat Hull City on Saturday afternoon, but it was far from a vintage performance from the Gunners.
Indeed, this was a game in which Arsenal huffed and puffed towards three points, it took a lot of work to break Hull down, and you really wouldn’t describe the football on display as free-flowing.
TalkingPoints
Hit or miss: Where will Christos Tzolis rank on Mikel Arteta's list of players signed from outside Europe's top-five leagues?
Arsenal fans online were not impressed by Tzolis against Hull, and it’s not hard to understand why.
Indeed, the winger seemed to be a beat behind throughout this game and his lack of pace really was there for all to see, particularly during transition moments.
One fan gave a damning view, stating:
“Can’t stress enough how awful Tzolis has been. Almost like he’s doing this on purpose.”
Meanwhile, another made a very concerning comparison, saying:
“Tzolis is our worst winger since Willian”
Of course, Willian has a reputation for being arguably the worst signing of the Mikel Arteta era at Arsenal, simply put, that’s not the type of comparison you want to be receiving.
Tzolis’s stats on the day weren’t great either, this wasn’t just a case of the eye test letting him down.
| Statistic | Christos Tzolis vs Hull |
|---|---|
| Minutes played | 68 |
| Key passes | 1 |
| Successful dribbles | 0 |
| Times dispossessed | 1 |
| Unsuccessful touches | 1 |

| Pass accuracy | 77.8% |
| Crosses attempted | 4 |
| Accurate crosses | 0 |

Tzolis managed just one key pass, completed zero dribbles and recorded a pass accuracy of 77.8 per cent. He also failed to complete any of his four attempted crosses, was fouled five times and managed just 35 touches in 68 minutes.
“Tzolis is like an old dog that can’t run anymore and is a few weeks from being put down. But instead he’s 24 yrs old and meant to be in his athletic prime,” Another wrote, slating Tzolis for the lack of speed he showed against Hull.
“Incredible to think Arsenal transfer summer was selling two left wingers, missing out on top targets and signing Tzolis, he is Championship level,” Another fan stated.
Arsenal do have clear issues down the left wing, Tzolis hasn’t been great in recent weeks, and after selling both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard this summer, there isn’t much room to rotate.
Mikel Arteta may have to roll the dice and sign a new left winger in January, because, at the moment, Arsenal look blunt down that flank.
