Kristaps Porziņģis’ time with the Golden State Warriors may be heading toward an uncomfortable ending. As the center steps away from basketball to focus on his health, his spot in the Warriors’ locker room has reportedly been cleared out, with both the nameplate above the locker and the items previously inside it no longer there.
The report sparked a split among NBA fans. Some saw little reason to make a story out of an expected departure, while others questioned the Warriors’ treatment of a player they chose to bring back on a $40 million contract just months ago.
Warriors beat writer Kenzo Fukuda shared the update on X, reporting that Porziņģis’ locker had been cleared.
“Kristaps Porzingis’s spot in the Warriors’ locker room has been cleared out. The nameplate above where his locker was is gone, and the items that were previously there are no longer there,” Fukuda wrote.
The 31-year-old has not played for Golden State this season because of lingering effects from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). The Warriors acquired him from the Atlanta Hawks in a February 5 trade, but the 2024 NBA champion appeared in just 15 games for the team during the 2025-26 season.
Despite that limited run, Golden State brought him back in June on a two-year, $40 million extension.
The Latvian big man had been working out at the team’s facility before training camp but stepped away after health concerns resurfaced. On October 14, the Warriors announced that he would remain sidelined indefinitely because of a “health-related matter.”
Questions over his future grew on Wednesday, when ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater revealed that Porziņģis had stopped receiving his twice-monthly salary payments, with the Warriors also looking into trade possibilities.
Porziņģis then announced Friday that he was stepping away from the game to prioritize his health and work with the Warriors on a resolution. But with Golden State reportedly seeking a trade, Porziņģis’ now-empty locker hardly looks like a sign that the team is saving him a place for a return.
Fans were quick to debate what the move meant. One account reacted with a blunt dismissal of Porziņģis’ locker cleanout, writing, “They said thanks for nothing.”
Another questioned why the locker update was news at all, posting, “Why is this even news? We all know this…he retired smh.”
One fan described the cleanout as a sign that Golden State had moved on, while criticizing how the situation was being handled.
“THE WARRIORS JUST CLEANED OUT KRISTAPS PORZINGIS’ LOCKER AND PULLED HIS NAMEPLATE,” the fan wrote. “That’s not a team waiting on a comeback… that’s a team moving on. Withholding his salary was one thing… emptying his locker while he steps away from the game is cold. The unicorn MSG once fell in love with deserved a quieter exit than this. Is Golden State handling this the right way, or did they cross a line?”
Others pointed to the Warriors’ decision to re-sign him in the first place. One fan argued, “Mind you resigning him this offseason was COMPLETELY optional.”
Another questioned the team’s judgment given Porziņģis’ ongoing health problems, adding, “They saw he couldn’t breathe the past 3 seasons & still extended him for no reason.”
There was also a more unusual theory about who might have been behind the cleanout. One fan joked, “Draymond was fs the one that did it.”
For now, the locker room report does not confirm a trade or a formal separation. But with Porziņģis stepping away, his salary situation under scrutiny, and Golden State reportedly exploring trade options, a split seems inevitable.
