Plymouth Parkway boss Karl Curtis hopes his side can draw an English Football League side after making the FA Cup first round for the first time.

Plymouth Parkway boss Karl Curtis hopes his side can draw an English Football League side after making the FA Cup first round for the first time.

The Southern League Premier Division South club beat seventh-tier rivals Chertsey Town 2-0 at their Bolitho Park home to progress past the fourth qualifying round and make history.

"You want the fans to have their big day and the players, and us as staff as well," Curtis told BBC Radio Devon.

"It'd be huge if we could get a league club here at Bolitho because it would create memories regardless of the result.

"Whatever the outcome might be, it'd be one of those moments and days where people in 20 years' time people will be talking about it."

Parkway, who are based less than two and a half miles from League One side Plymouth Argyle, did not break the deadlock until the final 20 minutes.

Former Truro City striker and Parkway's top scorer Andrew 'Rocky' Neal found the net with 20 minutes to go before teeing up Reece Thompson in stoppage time to seal the famous win.

”We found a way,” said Curtis, whose side are second in their division, nine points ahead of their opponents.

“Chertsey, to be fair to them, came with a clear game plan and it was working for them.

“We were set for it, we knew what they could do, so it wasn't an element of surprise on our part, but it was a case of we had to adapt to the way we were going about the game at half-time.

“It was really important that we got in at half-time 0-0, not because they were creating chances - it was just I felt we were most vulnerable when we had the ball and they set that trap where they wanted to counter attack us and there were a couple of moments where I was really nervous in terms of us having the ball and we didn't read the situation.

“'Rocky' Neal was absolutely outstanding, he takes his goal brilliantly and then for him to have the quality and composure to set Reece up for the second was magnificent.”

'Continuing the momentum'

The result is the latest positive for a club formed as a park football team less than 40 years ago.

They currently occupy one of their highest-ever league positions and are in talks about overseas investment with the aim of one day reaching the EFL.

Curtis says making the first round of the FA Cup, and the chance of a tie against a side from League One or League Two, is a massive step in Parkway’s journey.

“The obvious thing is the finances, but from a footballing perspective for me it's belief and it's continuing the momentum,” he said.

“We've done absolutely nothing yet, but we've had a really positive start and it just continues that momentum.

“The boys in that changing room are starting to really believe in themselves as a group and what we could do.

“We're not going to get carried away, but as a manager I always want my players to be full of confidence and belief, and that's what days like today will generate.”
