Trio of turnovers haunts No. 1 Georgia in upset loss vs. Auburn

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs fell at home to the Auburn Tigers in a 27-24 loss where three Georgia turnovers helped fuel an Auburn upset win. The Tigers had lost nine straight games in the series and had not won in Athens since 2005. However, Auburn snapped both of the streaks with a big win for first-year head coach Alex Golesh.

Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown outplayed Georgia's Gunner Stockton, who had three turnovers including a critical fumble late in the game that set up Brown and Auburn for a game-winning field goal. Brown finished the day with 265 total yards and two total touchdowns.

"We like to say the Dawgs don't beat the Dawgs, but they found a way to beat themselves today," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said after the game. "I'll open by giving a lot of credit to Auburn. Their physicality showed. I thought they were physical at the line of scrimmage."

Georgia also had a missed field goal as the Bulldogs fall to 6-1 on the season including 4-1 in the SEC. Georgia started out the game strong with a 14-0 lead, but allowed Auburn to score 24 unanswered points. Georgia faced a 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter and managed to tie the game up after Stockton capped off a 90-yard plus touchdown drive with a touchdown pass to London Humprheys late in the fourth quarter.

Georgia forced an Auburn punt and then appeared to be set up to have an attempt at a game-winning field goal. However, Stockton fumbled the ball around midfield to give Auburn a short field for the Tigers' final drive. Georgia aided Auburn with a roughing the passer penalty and kicker Alex McPherson nailed a 34-yard game-winner to raise the Tigers to 4-2 and 2-2 in SEC play.
