A care worker involved in mass disorder after an Old Firm cup match is facing a jail term.

Lisa Gibson, 37, spat at Celtic fans and threw a vape at them from the main stand of Ibrox Stadium on March 8.

Rangers hosted Celtic in a Scottish Cup quarter-final tie that day, which the visitors won on penalties.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that at the end of the game, both sets of fans entered the pitch and engaged in disorder.

Prosecutor Abbas Ali said: “Gibson was seen in the main stand at the west enclosure spitting twice, shouting and gesticulating at opposing fans.

“She threw an unknown item at Celtic fans who were at the side wall of the Broomloan Stand.

“Gibson remonstrated with police as she was encouraged to leave the stadium.”

Gibson, of Glasgow’s Dalmarnock, handed herself in to police after a media release of her image was sent out after the game.

CCTV of the incident was played to the court in which Gibson could be seen speaking to a police officer.

She was heard to say: “Why are you not turning to them?”

She also said: “This is our stadium.”

Gibson is the first woman to appear in court for the disorder after the match.

She pleaded guilty on Wednesday to conducting herself in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of the peace.

Mark Dunbar, defending, told the court that the item his client threw was a vape.

The lawyer said: “As you have been told, there was absolute carnage.

“What seemed to spark her was an item was thrown which came from opposition fans which struck her son on the leg.

“There was no injury, but that tipped her over the edge.

“She appears candid and is humiliated – this is a difficult situation as she works in the care sector, and this conviction could have a devastating impact on her future career.

“Albeit it is an extremely serious matter, she did not enter the field of pay, which could distinguish it from others.”

The sentence was deferred until next month by Sheriff Lorraine Glancy KC, who granted Gibson bail, pending background reports.

The sheriff said: “All sentencing options remain open and you should make preparations with that in mind.”
