Liverpool's long wait for a return to Premier League action is finally over, with this weekend finally providing a chance for the season to continue after an extended three-week break.

With October now here, the campaign will step it up another notch, with Andoni Iraola set to learn even more about what his squad of players is capable of, with some difficult and testing fixtures coming up.

It will also allow the recruitment team to see where work needs to be done, with some key areas that need to be assessed before the January transfer window rolls around.

So, with that said, here's a look at the latest Liverpool transfer news and rumors ahead of another busy weekend of action for the Reds.

Josh Acheampong (Chelsea)

Liverpool has been linked with a transfer swoop for Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong

Liverpool is interested in a move for Chelsea star Josh Acheampong, with TeamTalk claiming that the Reds are one of five Premier League clubs to have shown interest in the defender since the summer.

The 20-year-old is a graduate from the Blues' academy, and has featured six times for new boss Xabi Alonso this season, as he looks to make himself a regular in the team.

With a contract that only runs until 2029, the report claims that Chelsea is actively trying to get Acheampong to sign a new contract, which would effectively end the pursuit of Liverpool and the other clubs that continue to track his progress.

Liverpool.com says: Liverpool clearly needs to consider the future of its backline, with Virgil van Dijk potentially leaving at the end of the season, alongside doubts over the long-term futures of Joe Gomez and loanee Ronald Araujo.

Looking at another young star like Acheampong makes sense, future-proofing the backline, though Chelsea's push for a new contract comes as a potential roadblock to that move.

If a deal is possible, however, it remains to be seen what the Blues could ask for in return, with the side well-known for driving a hard bargain when it comes to sales.

Gilberto Mora (Club Tijuana)

Gilberto Mora has been linked with a transfer switch to Liverpool

Club Tijuana and Mexico wonderkid Gilberto Mora continues to be rumored with interest from Liverpool, but it seems that it isn't the only Premier League team eyeing a move.

According to Mexican outlet El Porvenir, Arsenal is also in the mix for the youngster, having prepared an offer to sign him in the coming transfer window.

An approach has been made to Club Tijuana's management about discussions over a deal, which could ramp up the need for other clubs to do the same in the near future.

Liverpool.com says: It will come as little surprise to Liverpool that other teams may join the hunt for Mora, considering the fact that he is one of the brightest up-and-coming talents out there.

That naturally comes with the territory of recruiting high-profile players, and it will be up to the Reds to convince the player and his team that Anfield is the best place to be for his development.
