Djeidi Gassama, Dujon Sterling or Emmanuel Fernandez? Rangers fans vote for their biggest disappointment vs Hearts

There were a number of Rangers players who put in less than adequate performances against Hearts at Tynecastle on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Fernandez had a first half worth forgetting and did not get any better in the second period either. Djeidi Gassama was a surprise inclusion, but Derek McInnes did not like what he saw and took him off for Badredine Bouanani early in the second half.

Dujon Sterling, too, found himself on the receiving end of criticism for his big miss late on, while Minsu Kim was blamed for the concession of a goal that gave Hearts the momentum they were craving.

Emmanuel Fernandez voted the worst performer by Rangers fans

Rangers fans interacted with TalkingPoints in the aftermath of the game to vote for the player who let them down the most. Even during the match, regular users kept commenting on the live blog, and it was certainly not a performance they were expecting from some of the players.

Nearly 200 fans interacted with the poll after the game, and of those, more than half believed that Fernandez was the worst Gers player on the pitch. The Nigerian centre-back received 58 per cent of the vote.

Gassama was the second-worst, according to the fans, and he received 29 per cent of the vote. He failed to impact the game on the left wing, and was rightly taken off by McInnes.

Minsu was ahead of Sterling in the list, with the former receiving 9 per cent of the vote share, while the latter got just 4 per cent. It was arguably both players’ worst performance of the season, but that speaks to how good they have been thus far.

How did Fernandez let his teammates and Derek McInnes down?

There were many instances during the game where Fernandez was found lacking. For a side aiming to challenge and potentially win the title, he did little to show why he should be a regular starter.

As early as the fourth minute, he lost an important duel which he shouldn’t have contested, and that saw Hearts muster a decent goal-scoring chance for themselves. Nicolas Raskin intervened and picked up a yellow card, or else it could have been a horrible start for Fernandez and the visitors.

Even for Hearts’ first goal, he did not close down the attacker, who then played a pass into the danger area, and Ivor Pandur was beaten in goal. Such decision-making is unacceptable, and it is a surprise that McInnes is still sticking with him.

The Aberdeen game is a good opportunity to take him out of the playing eleven and bring in Ben Godfrey. The English defender did well before picking up an injury and has not had a chance to prove his worth since then.
