“I Don’t See Him Ever Getting That Place Back” – Carragher Questions Future Of £56M Arsenal Star

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says Arsenal’s decision to sign Bruno Guimaraes could spell trouble for Martin Zubimendi.

The Spanish international only joined the Gunners from Real Sociedad in a deal worth £56m last summer, but Carragher doesn’t think he will play regularly next season following Guimaraes’ arrival:

“In terms of being what he was supposed to be when he was brought in. He was supposed to come in and be this controller. I don’t see him ever getting that place back now.”

Zubimendi was already out of favour under Arteta

It is notable that the midfielder didn’t end his first season with the Gunners in the starting lineup.

After starting the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid, he only made the eleven on one further occasion, which was on the final day against Crystal Palace.

Mikel Arteta’s side had already won the title by then, and Zubimendi was deployed out of position at right-back.

Myles Lewis-Skelly had moved ahead of him in the pecking order, with Arteta also starting the teenager in place of Zubimendi for the Champions League final.

What is the latest on Guimaraes’ move to Arsenal?

A fee in the region of £75m has been agreed with Newcastle, and the 28-year-old is expected to undergo a medical later this week.

Guimaraes will not be in the squad to face Real Betis on Wednesday evening, and it is unlikely that he will face Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup on Sunday either, having barely trained since his return from holiday.

There is a greater chance of the midfielder featuring against Cesc Fabregas’s Como in a week’s time.
