Luka Doncic Says Lakers' 'Ceiling Is Even Higher' After Opening Rout Of Warriors

Luka Doncic said the Los Angeles Lakers can get even better after Wednesday's 127-105 season-opening win over the Golden State Warriors. Doncic had 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in his first game as the face of the franchise since LeBron James' departure.

"It's a lot of honor to be the face of the franchise," said Doncic. "That's just the first game. I think our ceiling is even higher."

Walker Kessler went 12-for-12 from the field in his Lakers debut and finished with 26 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Los Angeles acquired him from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade this summer. It was his first regular-season game since shoulder surgery last November.

Kessler was the first Laker to make every shot on at least 12 attempts since Wilt Chamberlain in 1969. His 10 dunks were the most by a Laker since Shaquille O'Neal in 2003.

"When I was driving, [Kessler] stepped up," said Doncic. "When I was doubled, he played in the pocket. Very impressive game from him."

Doncic led a 17-4 run to end the second quarter, capped by a banked-in 49-footer at the halftime buzzer. He also exchanged words with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg.

JJ Redick started Doncic, Kessler, Austin Reaves, Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams. Reaves added 23 points and six assists.

Stephen Curry scored 23 points for Golden State, 16 in the first quarter. The Warriors played without Jimmy Butler III, Brandin Podziemski, Kristaps Porzingis, Moses Moody and Charles Bassey.
