Borders takes centre stage as Tour de France route unveiled

The route will take in Heriot, Innerleithen, Galashiels, Melrose, Hawick and Newcastleton amongst other places as the famous race goes through the region.

Newcastleton will host an intermediate sprint, while Melrose will feature the only categorised climb of stage one.

The race will begin in Edinburgh on July 2 and travel through Midlothian, the Borders, and Dumfries and Galloway before heading into England.

Councillor Euan Jardine, leader of Scottish Borders Council, said: "It is a real honour for the Scottish Borders to host the majority of stage one of the 2027 Tour de France.

"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our communities to witness and celebrate one of the world's greatest sporting events on our doorstep."

He said the event would shine an international light on the region.

He said: "The race will also shine a global spotlight on the South of Scotland, showcasing our stunning landscapes and reinforcing our reputation as Scotland’s leading cycling destination.

"We are particularly excited that Melrose will feature the stage’s only official categorised climb, while Newcastleton will host the intermediate sprint on stage one.

"Both locations will provide fantastic opportunities for spectators to experience the race atmosphere and be part of cycling history."

The event is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors.

Mr Jardine said: "With just 250 days to go, excitement is building across the region, and we look forward to welcoming tens of thousands of visitors to the Scottish Borders.

"From the only categorised climb of stage one in Melrose to the intermediate sprint in Newcastleton, spectators will be at the heart of the action as riders compete for crucial points towards the iconic red polka dot and green jerseys."

The full 2027 route was unveiled in Paris today.

It marks the first time the Tour de France will start in Scotland, and only the fifth visit to Britain for the Tour de France.

The 2027 edition will also see the women’s Tour de France Femmes begin in Leeds, making Britain the first nation outside France to host both Grand Départs in the same year.

The opening ceremony and rider presentation will take place at Edinburgh Castle on June 30.

Tickets for the event go on pre-sale at midday on Friday, October 23, with general sale beginning on October 30.
