Michael Carrick has endured an astonishing reversal at Manchester United, transforming the club’s fortunes last season before overseeing their worst Premier League start in 40 years.
The former midfielder won 12 of his 17 league matches after replacing Ruben Amorim in January, securing third place and Champions League qualification.
However, United have won just once in eight Premier League fixtures this season, leaving them 16th following Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth.
Beyond results, questions surround Carrick’s tactics. United frequently settle for speculative long-range efforts, while their pressing intensity has deteriorated.
Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team’s approach following their 4-1 defeat against Como, before being benched against Bournemouth.
Although many expected an immediate dismissal, Carrick will remain in charge against Chelsea on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are among the potential replacements being discussed.
United’s managerial instability stretches back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and Amorim all departing.
Interestingly, Ferguson’s former players have enjoyed greater stability overseeing Salford City.
Gary Neville and Sir David Beckham led a new takeover in May 2025, with fellow Class of ’92 legends Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville remaining involved in the club.
Now, Salford have secured another experienced figure with extensive Manchester United connections.
Kate Nixon has officially joined Salford City as Football Operations and Executive Support Lead, confirming the appointment through LinkedIn.
Nixon previously spent more than 17 years at Manchester United, serving as an executive assistant before becoming VIP Protocol Manager in April 2021.
Her responsibilities included supporting senior executives, managing high-profile guests and overseeing prestigious club events.
She also helped organise memorial services for Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law, alongside book launches for Ferguson.
After leaving United in December 2024, Nixon worked for Altius8 before returning to club football this October.
She also serves as a trustee of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.
Announcing her appointment, Nixon expressed excitement about supporting Salford’s leadership and future ambitions.
Her position concerns football operations and executive support, rather than managing Salford’s first team.
