Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards has grown into one of the most exciting and best players in the NBA.
Edwards, the top-overall selection of the 2020 Draft, is a four-time All-Star and has led the Timberwolves out of the first round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
The Timberwolves reshaped the roster around Edwards this offseason, headlined by the acquisition of LaMelo Ball and the addition of Jonathan Kuminga. Edwards has high hopes for him and his teammates, but not everyone agrees.
Edwards, entering his seventh season, has his sights set on winning the NBA championship. However, the guard is planning to go about that in a different way than many would expect. He wants his squad to be more physical.
“We gon’ foul the [expletive] out you,” Edwards said while streaming during his unfiltered Believe That Awards live stream. “It’s a bunch of [expletive] this year.”
One prominent player in former Cincinnati Bengals star Chad Ochocinco has already come at Edwards for his comments, and now former NFL MVP and Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton is weighing in.
“Boy, making a promise in October means nothing if that promise ain’t got no validity in May or with that type of team; we expecting you to be still playing in June,” Newton explained on the “4th&1 With Cam Newton.”
“What is here is that I take this message as fool’s gold. Ant-Man, bro, you have all the makings to be not just a great player, to be the greatest player,” Newton said. “When you add the additions like LaMelo Ball, when you add the additions like Jonathan Kuminga, those things are like, ‘All right, I see what they trying to do.'”
Newton does like the additions to the Timberwolves roster, but wonders how the team will fare after losing veterans like Mike Conley, Naz Reid, and Julius Randle this offseason.
It’s a fair question. Of course, the Timberwolves do have a defense still anchored by four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, who will likely face an even bigger defensive challenge this season. His offense, however, could thrive with the play-making ability of Edwards and Ball.
The Timberwolves will get the season underway when they take on the Heat in Miami on Wednesday night. They’ll then be in Orlando to take on the Magic and complete the Florida swing Friday night before hosting the Toronto Raptors in their home opener on Sunday.
