Uncapped wing Macs Page has been called up to Wales' squad for the Nations Championship, with Rio Dyer ruled out of the autumn due to injury.

The Scarlets youngster was one of the notable absentees from Steve Tandy's autumn squad last week, having started the season in fine form for the west Walians.

Having crossed for four tries in his first four matches of the season, Page had been expected to feature in Wales' squad - having previously been called up once before for the tour of Japan last year.

However, the 21-year-old was ultimately not included.

Instead, Tandy opted for Josh Adams, Gabriel Hamer-Webb, Ellis Mee, Blair Murray, Louis Rees-Zammit, Tom Rogers and Dyer as his back-three options.

Unfortunately, having earned a Wales recall after a year out of the squad, Dyer was forced off halfway through the Dragons' defeat to Ospreys on Saturday night - having just scored.

Page was also forced off injured on the weekend, having suffered a head injury after trying to score his second try against the Stormers.

The Scarlets confirmed on Monday that Page would fly home from South Africa, as he wasn't fit to face the Bulls this weekend.

“Macs improved fairly quickly post match," said the Scarlets in a statement. "He will not be available for next weekend’s game against the Vodacom Bulls as he will follow World Rugby guidelines following a concussive injury.”

He will join Taine Plumtree and Joe Hawkins, who are also flying back from South Africa to join up with the national team.

Following his initial omission, Scarlets director of rugby Nigel Davies had said it was only a matter of time before he was brought in by Wales.

“Obviously he’s been excellent in the first block of the season. It’s great that we’ve got seven boys in there and a lot of people are saying we should have eight with Macs,” Davies said.

“I think Macs has been brilliant, what he needs to do is maintain his form really. I think from a Welsh perspective, Steve Tandy has probably got a situation where he hasn’t had before where he’s got some really tough calls in most positions now.

“We’re creating a lot of depth, which we haven’t had, so he’s got some tough calls to make.”

Davies said Page “no doubt would have been one of those tough calls”.

“What Macs has got to do is just keep on going," he added. "His form is great; he’s got to be able to maintain that now. I’m sure if he does, he’s going to come into contention again.”

“I suppose with Macs, it’s a matter of when, not if, he plays for Wales, given the way he’s developing. Definitely if he carries on the way he is. I think he’s just getting better.”

There had been rumours that Page qualified for Ireland, following links to Munster in the summer.
