Reading FC player ratings with 8/10 stars vs Barnsley

'El Gato' got a lot of stick from the fans during the game due to his slow distribution in the first-half and in parts of the second-half, but he had a solid performance to keep Tobi Adeyemo and Cameron McGeehan at bay.

Dokes continues to prove why he was one of the best signings of the summer, completely revolutionising Reading's right-hand side alongside Kyreece Lisbie. Defensively sound and continues to be another asset in the attacking space, he also kept a highly-sought after Reyes Cleary in his back pocket.

PAUDIE O'CONNOR - 8

One of the most consistent players for the Royals this season, always first to reach the headers in aerial duels and a real warrior. Against Barnsley he was even helping start attacks through his long balls. Another solid performance.

JERIEL DORSETT - 8

Dorsett has been the subject of a lot of criticism this season but ever since stepping up for an injured Benn Ward, he has silenced a lot of critics. His role as a centre-half is clear and you can see that the defender feels more comfortable in the position rather than at left-back. He made some great tackles, crucial blocks and his partnership with Lane and Roberts of the left has been solid.

HAYDON ROBERTS - 5

Roberts put in another decent performance for the Royals, he has become consistent since returning from injury last season. He struggled against Vimal Yoganathan and Patrick Kelly for large portions of the game, and lost possession quite easily when driving forward but was still running back and doing his defensive duty.

ANDY RINOMHOTA - 8

Rinomhota has completely changed Reading's midfield since coming back from injury and being chosen ahead of Charlie Savage. The academy graduate continues to deliver, clean-up other's mistakes and put it hard tackles to stop attacks, recover balls and shut down passing lanes. He nearly scored against Barnsley if his blocked shot just bounced a little further back.

LEWIS WING - 7

The skipper's role has changed since the introduction of a proper number ten role in Josh Stokes/George Earthy and Andy Rinomhota as his partner. He plays deeper, helps O'Connor when the full backs join the attack and stays further in midfield amidst attacks rather than being at the forefront. In saying that, his defensive contributions have helped the Royals win more games and it did so against Barnsley.

JOSH STOKES - 8

The Bristol City loanee still has a lot to learn and work on, but his pass to Kyreece Lisbie for the winner was absolutely perfect. He keeps improving each game, and it seems like the Royals could have another Kamari Doyle on their hands.

KYREECE LISBIE - 10

There is not much more Lisbie could have done except score a hattrick. The winger has taken to League One football like a storm and looks dangerous every time he touches or receives the ball. Both his goals were taken with precision and incredible technical ability, there is still so much more to come from him.

PADDY LANE - N/A

You have to feel for the winger who has been on incredible form since returning from injury last season. He seemingly pulled his calf whilst on a transitional run, so we will have to wait and see when he will be back.

JACOB BROWN - 5

Brown is more effective as an impact substitute rather than a starter and his performance against Barnsley exemplified it. Two shots in 77 minutes, 0.20 xG and caught offside at least three times due to his late runs. There is so much that needs to improve in his game to be able to lead Reading's line.

SUBS

RANDELL WILLIAMS - 6

Williams replaced an injured Lane in the first half. I'm still not entirely sure what Williams brings to the team apart from pace. He took a very long time to get into the game and a few of his decision in the first-half could have led to Barnsley extending their lead. However his cross in the second-half for Lisbie's equaliser brought the Royals back into the game.

CHARLIE SAVAGE - 6

Savage has been in the headlines recently but not for his work on the pitch, rather as he might be playing against his father in the FA Cup - a fixture, mind you, that will be played another two times in the league. He came on in the 77th minute for Josh Stokes and continued his role effectively.

JAMIE REID - 5

Reid also came on in the 77th minute but the Royals were forced on the backfoot at this point so there was no chance for him to shine.
