WELTON Rovers’ recent upturn in form came to an abrupt halt at West Clewes where a disciplined Almondsbury side claimed all three points with a 2-0 win in the first division of the Jewson League, writes Bob Allard.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, the visitors made the most of their key moments while Welton were left to rue missed opportunities. The opening stages were fragmented, dominated by niggling fouls that prevented either side from establishing any rhythm.
Welton carved out the first meaningful chance when Kieron Smith’s clever play released Chris Pile. Spotting keeper Sam Burgess racing off his line, Pile attempted an audacious lob that had the home crowd holding its breath, only for the ball to bend agonisingly wide. Smith then tested Burgess from distance, but the keeper gathered comfortably.
Almondsbury struck in the 33rd minute. Alex Hill’s corner from the right found Liam Nicholls, whose glancing header drifted into the far corner to give the visitors the lead.
Welton responded well and pushed hard for an equaliser before the interval. Harry Williamson’s corner was met firmly by Nick Taylor, but his header was cleared off the line as Almondsbury clung on.
The second half saw both sides searching for the crucial next goal. Welton keeper Jude Brown produced an outstanding fingertip save to deny Reece Purnell.
Welton continued to probe, and neat interplay involving Reuben Richards allowed Pile to deliver a cross from the right that Williamson met on the run, only for Burgess to save sharply.
The decisive moment arrived ten minutes from time. Ethan Roberts surged down the left and picked out Nicholls in space inside the Welton area. The striker made no mistake, drilling home his second to seal the victory.
Despite Welton’s endeavour, Almondsbury’s clinical finishing proved the difference, leaving the Green Army frustrated after a competitive but ultimately disappointing afternoon.
