Reading head into the League One clash looking to continue their strong form, and Caldwell believes their ability to break quickly on the counter-attack sets them apart from other opponents.
Speaking ahead of the game, the Wigan boss admitted his side will need to be sharp both in possession and immediately after losing the ball if they are to limit Reading's attacking threat.
"Reading will be a totally different proposition than Stevenage - they're a team that's very different on transitions.
"When we have the ball, we have to be very connected, and when we lose the ball, we have to move quickly in our five-second fury, and defensive transition, and don't give them opportunity to counter attack."
Caldwell is also weighing up whether striker Christian Saydee is ready to play a part against Reading after returning to the bench for last weekend's victory over Stevenage.
The former AFC Bournemouth forward has not featured this season after suffering a calf injury during pre-season, and Caldwell revealed he was only fit enough for a brief cameo if needed last time out.
"We put him on the bench at Stevenage, knowing he'd only be able to play 10 minutes at the most," Caldwell said.
"But we had to take Brad (Burrowes) off the field, because he'd played a lot of minutes, he'd had a high week, and he was a potential injury risk in the last 30 minutes.
"We definitely don't want to lose Brad, because I thought he was outstanding again in the game, which contributed to Chris not coming on."
The Latics boss also hinted at further fitness concerns ahead of Reading's visit.
"There's a couple we'll assess tomorrow, and see if they'll be available for the game," he added.
