Ukraine's top tennis player Elina Svitolina defeated China's Guo Hanyu in the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, China.
She dispatched the local wildcard entrant in straight sets: 6-1, 6-4.
Following a dominant opening set, Svitolina temporarily ceded momentum in the second frame. The Chinese challenger capitalized to lead by a break on two separate occasions; however, Svitolina responded immediately with counter-breaks in both instances. Serving at 5-4 on Guo's delivery, the Ukrainian star converted her fourth match point to seal victory in one hour and 24 minutes.
The triumph marks Svitolina’s third career quarterfinal appearance at the Wuhan Open, having earlier reached this stage in 2014 and 2019. Her personal best result at the tournament remains a semifinal finish in 2014.

Svitolina’s quarterfinal opponent will be determined in the upcoming clash between Italy's Jasmine Paolini and UK's Sonay Kartal. The upcoming match will represent Svitolina’s 12th WTA quarterfinal of the season.
Svitolina remains in strong contention for a qualifying berth at the season-ending WTA Finals. She now holds sixth place in the live WTA Race and maintains strong statistical odds of securing a spot among the elite eight-player field.
Fellow Ukrainian standout Marta Kostyuk was eliminated earlier in the tournament, falling to Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the second round of the Wuhan draw.
