It is course-correction time in the NFL.

Tuesday’s trade deadline looms large, and with teams headed in different directions as the season wears on, NFL insiders believe this year’s list of deals could be larger than ever. One team, the Indianapolis Colts, has already shifted into seller mode and another, the Chicago Bears, swung for the fences in a deal for defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons.

What other trades could be around the corner?

Let’s dive into the latest rumors.

Colts now waiting to see

When the Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard, it sparked the first run of trades from an organization that looks to be starting a rebuild. The Colts traded guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, and sent DeForest Buckner back to the NFC West in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Those moves, coupled with wide receiver Josh Downs asking for a trade himself, sparked the idea of a “fire sale” in Indianapolis. Not only could Downs help an offense that is hoping for a deep playoff run, but running back Jonathan Taylor might be the most intriguing player potentially available ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

But Indianapolis might be hitting the pause button on that fire sale, at least for a few days. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Colts are waiting to see how Week 9’s game against the Dallas Cowboys goes before “revisiting the offers on the table and making the trades that make sense on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the deadline:”

Here at SB Nation, we looked at potential landing spots for both Taylor and Downs already.

Those teams might have to wait a few more days before a trade can be finalized.

What about the Cowboys?

What about those Dallas Cowboys?

Dallas is in a fascinating position. The Cowboys are sitting at 3-5 and coming off a brutal overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, which might lead you to believe they will be sellers at the deadline. But that same 3-5 record is good enough for second in the NFC East, and just one game behind the New York Giants in the win column.

So what will the Cowboys do?

One thing they will not do, reportedly, is trade wide receiver George Pickens. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported he would be “beyond stunned” if the team moved the wide receiver:

While Pickens is not under contract for next year, Rapoport notes that between the NFC East, and the easy schedule coming up, he has a hard time believing that the Cowboys would be sellers at the deadline.

But could they actually be buyers?

Over at ESPN, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano believe that the Cowboys could make yet another addition to a defense that continues to struggle, identifying Arizona pass rusher Josh Sweat as an option.

Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat has been linked to Dallas, which could be in the pass rush market but hasn’t made any moves there yet. The sense I get from teams in the edge rusher market is that Sweat would prefer a new deal as part of a trade -- or at least a sweetener, such as a raise on his $18.1 million salary this year or next. He’s in the second year of a four-year, $76 million contract, so wanting it reworked so early in the deal could be a hurdle to a trade.

After adding so many pieces to the defense over the past year, through free agency, trades, and the draft, Jerry Jones could be motivated to add one more.

Bears not done?

The Chicago Bears already made a big addition to the defensive line, bringing in Jeffery Simmons in a deal with the Tennessee Titans. That trade paid immediate dividends in Chicago’s Week 8 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Consider these statistics from Bears beat writer Courtney Cronin:

According to Next Gen Stats, the Seahawks were held to 3.0 yards per play (3 sacks, INT) in the 48 plays where Simmons was on the field. In the eight plays where he was off the field, Seattle averaged 13.3 yards per play.

Darnold completed less than 50% of his passes with Simmons on the field and was a perfect 5-of-5 with a touchdown when he was off.

But could Chicago add another player to that defensive front?

Seth Walder believes they could, and is looking at Miami Dolphins pass rusher Josh Uche as that player:

“Dolphins edge Josh Uche,” Walder wrote. “The Bears already paid a ton to bring in Simmons, so I assume they’ll be seeking bargains for the rest of deadline season. But they still could use some help at edge, and Uche could contribute to that rotation alongside Montez Sweat, Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy. This season, Uche has recorded a pass rush win rate that ranks in the 60th percentile and a pressure rate in the 35th percentile at edge.”

Adding Uche on the edge would give that defensive line another big boost.

Steelers not trading for a WR?

A consistent rumor this fall has held that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be adding a wide reciever, to give Aaron Rodgers another target in the passing game as the team looks towards a playoff push.

But longtime Pittsburgh insider Gerry Dulac poured some cold water on that idea Wednesday.

In his weekly chat with readers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette scribe was asked several questions about the Steelers adding a WR ahead of the deadline. Dulac pushed back on those rumors each time.

“They’re not seriously pursuing any,” Dulac wrote. “What I’m hearing is they are not likely or intending to make a trade, but as I always say, never under-estimate the desperation of an NFL GM who might coming knocking for a deal.”

Pittsburgh has made additions to the WR room over the past two years. The Steelers traded for DK Metcalf ahead of the 2025 season, traded for Michael Pittman Jr. this past offseason, and drafted both Germie Bernard and Kaden Wetjen this past spring. While Steelers fans might love the idea of one more WR, they might be disappointed come Tuesday night.

What about Brian Thomas Jr.?

Astute observers noted something when the Jacksonville Jaguars posted a Halloween message that read in part “Weapons,” featuring some of the talented players around quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Specifically, they noted the lack of Brian Thomas Jr.:

A first-round pick in 2024, Thomas has never quite lived up to the billing in Jacksonville. And teams that need WR help should at least be inquiring about his availablity.

Two such teams? The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams have endured injuries at the WR spot, and both teams should be looking at adding to that position ahead of the deadline.
