Lionel Messi’s playing career has been remarkable but at 39, it remains to be seen how long the Argentine has left.

Messi has already retired from international football, playing the final game for his country earlier in October.

He is now just focused on Inter Miami, where he is currently under contract until 2028. By that point the former FC Barcelona star will be in his 40s and it will be interesting to see if he decides to extend his deal or hang up his boots completely.

Regardless of when he retires, Messi has now answered how he wants to be remembered. As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, he said: “A great athlete who always fought to achieve his goals and dreams.

“Sometimes I succeeded in achieving what I wanted, sometimes I didn’t… but I never stopped trying to win everything that was in front of me”

Many fans have now responded to that quote from Messi, praising him as a ‘humble’ player, sending their thanks and calling him the GOAT.

One fan wrote: “The greatest to ever play the beautiful game of football and yet so humble.”

Another responded: “He will always be remembered as the greatest on and off the pitch for eternity.”

A third stated: “Thank you Leo for teaching us to never stay down, regardless how hard life tries to knock us down.”

“Thank you so much sir GOAT,” commented a fourth, while another stated: “This is why Messi will always be the GOAT. Not just trophies, but that mentality. Never stopped trying even when he failed. From Rosario to World Cup champion, he fought for every dream. The greatest athlete of our generation.”

A fifth tweeted: “‘Sometimes I didn’t.’ The man won literally everything and still talks like he’s chasing his first trophy. That’s Messi.”

Another added: “‘Never stopped trying’ from the guy who literally won everything… that humility is why he’s the GOAT.”

Messi is now set to return to action on Saturday in a meeting against the New York Red Bulls.
