Joe Milton first-half takeaways: Eagles QB flashes athleticism

Joe Milton gave the Eagles a different way to generate offense in the first half against the Giants, even if the results remained inconsistent. Making his first Philadelphia start, Milton completed 8 of 14 passes for 87 yards and rushed five times for 24 yards as the Eagles took an 8-6 lead into halftime Sunday.

His mobility helped sustain Philadelphia’s only touchdown drive, and his two-point conversion supplied the halftime margin. However, three sacks, a lost fumble, and several stalled possessions prevented the Eagles from creating separation despite an outstanding defensive effort. Here is what stood out from Milton’s opening two quarters.

Joe Milton’s mobility immediately adds another dimension

Milton’s most meaningful early contribution came with his legs. His 19-yard scramble on third down extended Philadelphia’s touchdown possession, turning a potential punt into an opportunity to move downfield.

The play illustrated why the Eagles made the quarterback change. Milton can create when the original passing opportunity disappears, forcing defenders to account for him beyond the pocket. He finished the half as Philadelphia’s leading rusher, although that also reflected a conventional running game that struggled to produce consistent gains.

Milton also gave Darius Cooper a downfield opportunity on third down during the scoring drive, drawing a pass-interference penalty that moved Philadelphia inside the 5-yard line. Saquon Barkley finished the possession with a 3-yard touchdown run.

After a Giants penalty prompted Philadelphia to attempt a two-point conversion, Milton powered into the end zone and celebrated with a backflip. The sequence provided energy and an 8-6 advantage, but the more significant development was his ability to extend the possession in different ways.

Joe Milton’s passing production remains modest

Milton spread his eight completions among three targets. Makai Lemon caught four passes for 45 yards, Cooper added two receptions for 25 yards, and Dallas Goedert caught two for 17 yards.

Philadelphia had encouraging throws, including a 20-yard completion to Cooper, but it did not produce a passing touchdown or a completion longer than 20 yards. The Eagles also converted only three of nine third-down attempts. Milton’s athleticism created opportunities, but the passing game still needs more consistency.

Joe Milton’s lost fumble erases a valuable opportunity

Philadelphia recovered a muffed punt to create favorable field position, only to give possession back when Arvell Reese reached Milton for a strip-sack. The pressure exposed a protection breakdown and underscored the challenge of handling Dennard Wilson’s blitz packages.

Milton finished the half without an interception, but the lost fumble still cost Philadelphia a chance to extend its lead. His first half offered a foundation: useful mobility, some productive throws, and a scoring contribution. Turning those flashes into sustained drives is the next step.
