Chinmay Sutar, the 29-year-old Mizoram batter, registered an unbeaten 400* against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy 2026-27 plate league fixture at Sovima, becoming only the second Indian player to reach a quadruple century in first-class cricket. The knock arrived in just his second first-class appearance, and it lifted him past Prithvi Shaw's 379 to claim the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history.

Sutar was on 392 when the tea interval arrived. He crossed the 400-run mark in the 155th over, after which Mizoram declared their innings closed on 581 for 9. The all-time Ranji record of 443*, set by BB Nimbalkar for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49, remained beyond reach, but Sutar's effort stands as one of the most remarkable individual innings the tournament has witnessed in recent decades.

In the closing stages of his innings, Sutar shared an unbroken tenth-wicket stand of 190 runs with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak. That partnership ranks as the third highest for the final wicket in Ranji Trophy history, sitting 43 runs below the tournament record of 233, which Ajay Sharma (259) and Maninder Singh (78) put together for Delhi against Mumbai in the 1991-92 season.

How did Sutar come to represent Mizoram this season?

Sutar's cricketing roots lie with Mumbai, where he built his reputation through strong performances in local leagues before earning a place in the city's Vijay Hazare Trophy squad for the domestic 50-over competition. When the 2026-27 domestic season approached, he secured a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association and switched his affiliation to Mizoram.

His Ranji Trophy debut came in last week's season opener against Manipur, where he scored 35 in the first innings and followed it with 99 in the second. That second-innings contribution helped Mizoram mount a recovery after they had conceded a 68-run first-innings deficit, yet the side could not prevent a narrow three-wicket defeat. The 400* against Nagaland is therefore only his second Ranji Trophy innings of substance, making the achievement all the more striking.

What form did Sutar carry into the Ranji Trophy campaign?

In June 2026, Sutar played a central role as MSC Maratha Royals retained the Mumbai T20 League title, producing back-to-back half-centuries during the decisive phase of the competition. Across six innings in that tournament, he accumulated 212 runs at a strike rate approaching 120, a return that underlined his ability to perform when matches matter most.

Those performances in the city's T20 circuit strengthened his case for inclusion in Mumbai's Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, and the consistency he showed across formats gave him the confidence to seek a fresh challenge with Mizoram. His unbeaten 400* now places him firmly in the conversation around the most significant individual contributions in the Ranji Trophy's long history.
