Michael Carrick faces an agonising wait over his Manchester United future, with the club yet to decide whether he will remain in charge.
Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth left United 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
The Red Devils have won just two of their opening 12 competitive matches and are now eight games without victory.
It represents a remarkable collapse following Carrick’s successful interim spell earlier this year.
After replacing Ruben Amorim in January, the former midfielder guided United to third place and Champions League qualification, earning a permanent contract until 2028.
However, Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League humiliation against Como was followed by another disastrous performance at Old Trafford.
Captain Bruno Fernandes remained an unused substitute against Bournemouth after publicly questioning Carrick’s tactics.
Yet supporters continued singing the manager’s name, directing their anger towards the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the players instead.
Carrick also confirmed discussions with Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada following Sunday’s defeat.
Further crisis talks took place on Monday, although United have not announced their decision.
According to Sky Sports, United’s first-team players will return to Carrington on Tuesday, but Carrick’s presence remains uncertain.
The manager attended Carrington on Monday to watch the Under-21s face Hull City while Wilcox and Berrada considered their next move.
Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett believes United may be delaying their decision while identifying a replacement.
However, he also suggested the hierarchy are conscious of Carrick’s popularity among supporters.
Dorsett compared the situation to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure in November 2021, when United allowed the Norwegian to record an emotional farewell interview following his dismissal.
Officials could similarly seek a respectful conclusion to Carrick’s tenure, although no farewell arrangement has been confirmed.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann remain leading contenders should United dismiss their current manager.
For now, Carrick remains in limbo ahead of Tuesday’s scheduled training session.
