Part of a series of roster moves, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Sunday that they have picked up Jared McCain's 2027-28 team option. He's set to have a $6.8 million salary in the final year of his rookie-scale, four-year contract.
The Thunder had until Monday, Nov. 2, to decide on McCain's option. But this was a formality. The Philadelphia 76ers added him with the No. 16 pick of the 2024 NBA draft. After one-and-a-half seasons there, he was traded to OKC at the 2026 NBA trade deadline.
Since then, McCain has been a stellar addition as a bench scorer. He's averaged 10.5 points on 44.1% shooting and 2.1 rebounds in his time in OKC. He's shot 37.8% from 3 on 4.8 attempts. As injuries have completely nuked things for the Thunder, there's a decent chance he can put up better numbers in a larger role.
Depending on how McCain's year plays out, it will be interesting to see how contract negotiations go in the upcoming offseason. He'll be eligible for a new deal as he's coming off his third year in the NBA. For now, though, the Thunder badly need him to be a prominent scorer with the number of guys out.
