Leicester City have made some real transfer blunders over the years.

After Leicester won the Premier League in 2016, the economics completely changed, and King Power started to spend quite heavily.

Many of the transfers worked, most notably under Brendan Rodgers, but there were some clangers which ultimately are part of the reason why City now find themselves in League One.

With that said, we’ve ranked the top five worst Leicester signings since the Premier League began in 1992.

Top 5 worst Leicester City signings in Premier League history

5 – Ade Akinbiyi (£5.5m from Wolves)

Leicester shelled out a then club-record transfer fee of £5.5m for Ade Akinbiyi in 2000.

Akinbiyi had just come off the back of a 19-goal season with Wolverhampton Wanderers, so City paid a fortune for his signature.

However, it just never really worked out for the powerful frontman as he scored just 13 goals in 67 appearances before leaving for Crystal Palace for £2.2m 18 months later.

4 – Islam Slimani (£30m from Sporting)

Islam Slimani was Leicester’s statement signing after winning the Premier League in 2016, as he arrived for a club-record £30m deal.

Slimani’s first season wasn’t too bad as he scored nine goals whilst laying on five assists, but that was as good as it got.

The Algerian failed to form a partnership with Jamie Vardy and was shipped out on loan to Newcastle United, Fenerbahce and Monaco before leaving on a free transfer in 2021.

3 – Adrien Silva (£22m from Sporting)

Joining the list at number three is Adrien Silva, who was tangled up in one of the most bizarre deadline day stories in Premier League history.

Leicester thought they’d signed Silva just before the 2017 summer transfer window slammed shut, but they actually submitted the relevant paperwork 14 seconds too late.

It meant Silva could only train with City until January 2018, when he was finally registered and allowed to play a competitive game.

The former Sporting captain never lived up to expectations and struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

He only made 21 appearances before leaving on a free transfer to Sampdoria in 2020. Disaster.

2 – Ahmed Musa (£16m from CSKA Moscow)

Ahmed Musa wasn’t one of Leicester’s most expensive flops, but considering he had such little impact, he makes the list at number two.

Musa, who arrived after the title win, scored just five goals in 33 appearances. The Nigerian attacker failed to register an assist.

It quickly became apparent that he was nowhere near good enough for the Premier League, so he was sold on a permanent transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in 2018.

1 – Oliver Skipp (£25m from Tottenham)

And finally, we’ve selected Oliver Skipp as the worst Leicester City signing of the Premier League era.

Not only was the £25m transfer fee a complete waste of money, but Skipp was also part of the most catastrophic decline in Leicester’s 142-year history.

The former Tottenham midfielder made 68 appearances for the Foxes and suffered back-to-back relegations to the third tier.

Skipp has now been shipped off to Charlton on a season-long loan spell, and it’s unlikely Leicester will even see £5m back from their £25m.
