Why Dylan Larkin was suspended by Red Wings and where trade talks stand

Detroit Red Wings star Dylan Larkin, frustrated with the lack of progress on his trade request, is taking the Connor Hellebuyck playbook.

Larkin reported to training camp while waiting for the Red Wings to pull off a deal. Hellebuyck didn't show up and was suspended by the Winnipeg Jets.

The award-winning goalie and fellow U.S. Olympian was the first of the two to be traded, heading to the New Jersey Devils for a big haul. Now Larkin says he won't play.

"All I can say is that Dylan’s had enough of the situation," Larkin's agent, Pat Brisson, told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, on Thursday.

The "disappointed" Red Wings have suspended Larkin without pay, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said.

Here's what to know about the Dylan Larkin suspension and his trade request:

How much will Dylan Larkin lose in his suspension?

Larkin has an $8.7 million cap hit and makes $8 million this season. He will forfeit more than $41,000 a day while he is suspended, according to reports.

Which teams are on Dylan Larkin trade list?

Larkin, who has a no-trade clause, originally proposed the top three teams on the list below. He's up to 10 teams now. Here's the full list.

  • Minnesota Wild

  • Vegas Golden Knights

  • Florida Panthers

  • Tampa Bay Lightning

  • Colorado Avalanche

  • Utah Mammoth

  • Washington Capitals

  • Carolina Hurricanes

What are the Red Wings seeking in a trade?

Horcoff said "any trade must be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization's long-term goals."

He told reporters on Thursday that he has talked to teams on Larkin's list and has taken calls from other interested teams.

"We just continue to try to find solutions that fit for both sides," he said.

Why has Dylan Larkin requested a trade?

He said at training camp that he wasn't ready to answer that question.

How did the Red Wings address not having Dylan Larkin on Thursday?

The team called up center Sheldon Dries from the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Griffins under emergency conditions. The 32-year-old had eight points in four games this season with the AHL team and no points in 11 games this season and last with Detroit.
