Tonbridge Angels 2 Folkestone Invicta 0 match report: Substitute Frankie Baker scores twice in National League South derby

Two late goals saw Tonbridge take the points in National League South against Folkestone at Longmead on Tuesday night.

Substitute Frankie Baker’s second-half double proved the difference between the sides as Angels moved into the top five.

Former Tonbridge loan winger Paris Lock was named on the bench for Folkestone after joining Invicta prior to the game following his summer departure from Charlton.

Tonbridge started brightly although Ricky Korboa collected an early yellow card for a foul on Zach Ioannides.

On 10 minutes, Korboa’s cross-shot was directed goalwards by Lemar Reynolds but keeper Ted Collins made a smart save to turn the ball away for a corner.

Folkestone’s first opening came on 16 minutes when a short corner was delivered by Harvey Kedwell and after Adam Lovatt helped the ball on, Joe Pigott was unable to keep his effort down.

Angels keeper Nathan Harness then had to be at his best to push out Bobby Kelman’s near-post cross-shot while Harry Gardner volleyed over for the Angels at the other end.

Folkestone lost former Tonbridge defender Jamie Fielding to injury before the half-hour mark and the game lost its way before the break. Both teams had looked to get the ball down and play but they cancelled each other out by half-time.

Angels boss Alan Dunne made a double change at the break with Baker and Alfie Pavey introduced.

Their early intent was shown when Jaden Brown sent a shot at goal from distance to warm the palms of Collins. The introduction of Baker added impetus to their frontline and Sam Corne nearly forced his way through but saw his shot deflected wide for a corner.

Miller McDonald’s first involvement saw him fizz a cross along the six-yard box.

Folkestone responded but Pigott’s shot lacked power and Lovatt’s long-range effort was never going to trouble Harness.

The visitors had their best chance with 15 minutes but Ben Mason dragged his shot wide. They were behind within two minutes.

Excellent play by Brown saw Baker sent through and he fired emphatically beyond Collins.

The lead was nearly doubled on 85 minutes when Bunmi Babajide beat two players on the edge of the box, only for his shot to be blocked behind for a corner.

Folkestone piled the pressure on during five added minutes but Tonbridge put their bodies on the line and then broke away to score a second.

Two initial attempts were saved and blocked before Baker finally fired home to make the points safe.
