Inter sporting director Dario Baccin was in the stands as Monza beat Cagliari 4-0, with Gustavo Varela scoring twice in a performance that added a scouting backdrop to the result.

Calciomercato.com reported that Baccin attended to watch Cagliari midfielder Alessandro Romano and forward Paul Mendy. Football Italia and FCInter1908 also reported his presence at the U-Power Stadium, where Varela scored in the 47th and 79th minutes.

Jay Robinson scored Monza’s other second-half goal, struck the post before Varela converted the rebound for the fourth, and caught Baccin’s eye, according to Calciomercato.com. Varela also supplied the assist for Robinson’s goal and was named man of the match.

Baccin’s role at Inter’s sporting department has recently changed, as outlined in Inter’s sporting structure. His presence gave the match an Inter angle, while the reported focus of his visit was on Cagliari’s Romano and Mendy.

Varela’s prolific start at Monza

The Portuguese forward, born in 2005, joined Monza from Benfica’s second team for €2.5 million in the previous summer transfer window. His contract runs until June 2030.

Varela now has six goals in six Serie A appearances, one behind leading scorer Antonio Raimondo, who has seven for Frosinone. He had already scored twice in the league against Sassuolo and twice in the Coppa Italia against Avellino.

The double also made him the first player in Monza’s history to record multiple multi-goal games in Serie A. He scored against Inter at San Siro in the opening league fixture; his latest display came as Baccin watched a match featuring several young players on both sides.
